We are only a month and a half late in our honey harvesting. However, we finally did get to it this weekend, and it was a lot of fun to harvest the fruits of our bees' labors. Tim smoked the bees to calm them, and then gathered one super worth of honey. We brought it into the house, uncapped it, and spun it to extract the honey. It took some time, but we ended up with 20 pounds of dark honey. We found out that since it was a wet spring, and hot summer, the bees did most of their production in the fall. Fall pollen gives a darker honey. We had some honey on our bread tonight, and it was fun to try it out.
We left two of the big supers full of honey for the bees to eat over the winter. After uncapping the honey that we took, we left the honeycomb on the slats for next year. It takes the bees 13 pounds worth of honey to make the honeycomb in one super. So, next year we should have an even better year for honey production.

so is that going to be tim's halloween costume? that is way fun that you got so much honey. i am always so impressed with the projects you guys do.
I wish we all lived by each other- you would have the honey, Don would provide the eggs (and a chicken once-in-a-while), some veggies from Mike & Alissa's garden, and the rest of us would provide the appetites!!!
So good to get your Christmas letter! (even if I'm horrible at sending one out) Happy to see the blog and catch up with your family (all of them) I started a blog earlier this year to keep up with out-of-state cousins and grandparents....check it out
