For our high school, Junior Prom is the "prom of all proms." No one can go, unless you are taking a junior. There is a "senior ball", but it isn't as big as the junior prom.
Unfortunately, prom fell on the same weekend as State swimming this year. Normally, you could schedule around your swim event. But, Nate's event happened to be right during the dance at night. He struggled for weeks trying to decide what to choose. His date is also a breast-stroker, but he had already decided to go to prom.
In the end, Nate chose not to swim his event, and to enjoy Junior Prom instead. The event was held at the State Capitol, and they announce each couple as they come down the stairs. I have yet to see anyone fall down those stairs (anyone remember the 24-carrot beauty pageant?). After the promenade, each parent gets to dance the first dance with the child. Afterwards, they play "Hit the Road, Jack", and parents are invited to leave. This tradition has been going on for years and years.
Their "day activity" was held up at our ranch with the snowmobiles. The kids all enjoyed themselves, and it was a successful night fo Nate, in that he was able to go through the process of making an important decision (besides the fun of prom).
